Insulin Antibodies (IAA)
Insulin Antibodies (IAA) are immune proteins that target insulin — the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar. The presence of insulin antibodies indicates an autoimmune response against the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. This test is primarily used to help differentiate Type 1 diabetes (autoimmune) from Type 2 diabetes, particularly in ambiguous cases or in adults with late-onset autoimmune diabetes (LADA). Elevated insulin antibodies can also be present in patients treated with exogenous insulin, where the body develops antibodies in response to the injected hormone. This test is commonly ordered alongside other diabetes autoantibodies (GAD-65, IA-2, ZnT8) for a comprehensive autoimmune diabetes assessment.
