Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) is a protein that can serve as a tumor marker when found at elevated levels in the blood. While small amounts of CEA are normal, significantly elevated levels may be associated with colorectal, pancreatic, lung, breast, ovarian, or thyroid cancers. CEA is most commonly used to monitor treatment response and detect recurrence in patients with a known cancer diagnosis. It can also be elevated in non-cancerous conditions such as liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic smoking. CEA is not used as a standalone screening tool but adds valuable context when paired with other diagnostics.
