Cancer Antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a protein found on the surface of certain cancer cells that can be released into the bloodstream. It is most commonly associated with pancreatic cancer, where it serves as the primary tumor marker for monitoring treatment response and detecting recurrence. Elevated CA 19-9 levels may also be seen in colorectal, gastric, liver, and bile duct cancers. Non-cancerous conditions — including pancreatitis, bile duct obstruction, liver cirrhosis, and certain inflammatory conditions — can also cause CA 19-9 to rise. CA 19-9 is not used as a standalone screening tool but is most valuable when tracked over time alongside imaging and other diagnostics.
