Myeloperoxidase (MPO)

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an enzyme released by white blood cells (neutrophils) during the inflammatory response. While MPO plays an important role in immune defense by helping destroy pathogens, elevated levels in the blood are a sensitive marker of vascular inflammation and oxidative stress. High MPO levels are associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, and cardiovascular events — even in patients with otherwise normal cholesterol levels. MPO contributes to atherosclerosis by oxidizing LDL cholesterol and destabilizing arterial plaque, making it a valuable early warning biomarker. This test is particularly useful for individuals assessing cardiovascular risk beyond standard lipid panels.
