Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a gonadotropin produced by the pituitary gland that plays essential roles in reproductive health and fertility. In men, FSH stimulates the Sertoli cells in the testes to support sperm production (spermatogenesis). In women, FSH drives the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles during the menstrual cycle. Elevated FSH can indicate primary gonadal failure, diminished ovarian reserve, or the onset of menopause. Low FSH may suggest pituitary dysfunction or suppression from exogenous hormone use. FSH is commonly ordered alongside LH and sex hormones for a complete evaluation of reproductive and hormonal health.

Diagnostic Blood Test:

  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

Note: This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin. Cease biotin supplementation at least 72 hours prior to blood draw.
