Factor V Leiden is the most common inherited blood clotting disorder. This genetic test identifies a mutation in the Factor V gene that makes the blood more prone to forming abnormal clots — a condition known as thrombophilia. Individuals with one copy of the mutation (heterozygous) have a moderately increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and other clotting events. Those with two copies (homozygous) face a significantly higher risk. This one-time DNA test is particularly important for individuals with a personal or family history of unexplained blood clots, recurrent pregnancy loss, or those considering hormone therapy or oral contraceptives, which can further elevate clotting risk.
