Calcitonin is a hormone produced by the C-cells (parafollicular cells) of the thyroid gland. It plays a role in calcium and bone metabolism by helping to regulate calcium levels in the blood. Calcitonin's primary clinical significance is as a tumor marker — elevated levels are strongly associated with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a type of thyroid cancer that originates in the C-cells. This test is used for early detection and monitoring of MTC, screening individuals with a family history of the disease, and evaluating thyroid nodules. Calcitonin may also be elevated in other conditions, including kidney disease, pernicious anemia, and certain other neuroendocrine tumors.
