Prepping for blood work

The way you prepare for a blood draw can meaningfully affect your results. A few simple steps help ensure your numbers reflect your true baseline.

Fast when required

Several markers, including glucose, insulin, and a lipid panel, are best measured after a 10 to 12 hour fast. Water is fine and encouraged. Check your order details to see which of your tests require fasting.

Hydrate well

Being well-hydrated makes the draw easier and can improve sample quality. Drink water in the hours leading up to your appointment.

Time it consistently

Hormones like testosterone and cortisol follow a daily rhythm and are typically highest in the morning. For the most comparable results over time, aim to draw at a similar time of day, ideally early morning.

Pause biotin

High-dose biotin supplements can interfere with certain hormone assays. Stop biotin at least 72 hours before your draw.

Keep your routine steady

Avoid intense exercise, alcohol, and major dietary changes for 24 hours before testing so your results reflect your normal state.
